Southern New Hampshire University, also known as simply SNHU, is a private university with the main campus located in Manchester, which is the largest city in Manchester state, USA, having a population of more than 109 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2009 census, fact which also makes it the largest city in northern New England, which contains the states of Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
SNHU was established in 1932, as the New Hampshire School of Accounting and Secretarial Science, by Harry A.B. Shapiro and his wife Gertrude Crockett Shapiro. It gained university status in July, 2001, when it also adopted its current name. The university currently has an enrollment of more than 3000 undergraduate and postgraduate students and offers over 40 undergraduate majors including dual majors and over 30 minors, and nearly 20 graduate programs, many with concentrations.
SNHU's athletic teams are known as the Penmen, who compete in NCAA Division II, the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and the Northeast Ten Conference, in various sports, for both men and women, including in basketball, baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball and cheerleading. Their distinctive colors are blue and gold.
